Grandmothers read birthday cards differently. They read the message, then they read it again, then they prop the card on the mantelpiece and read it for a month. A card for grandma is one of the few you can be sure will be kept, which makes the blank space inside it feel a little bigger than usual.
This post is for that blank space. It has messages for grandchildren of every age, wording for the big milestone birthdays, lines for a grandmother who is far away or unwell, and a section at the end on the thing that works best of all: one card the whole family signs, with everybody's voice in it.
What to write in a birthday card for grandma
The best birthday messages for a grandmother follow one rule: tell her something she did. Not "you're the best grandma in the world," which every grandmother has read, but "I still make your potato soup when I'm homesick," which only you could write.
Try finishing one of these sentences before you look at the examples:
- The thing I always think of when I think of your house is...
- Something you taught me without meaning to was...
- My favourite thing we do together is...
- I still have the... you gave me.
Any one of those, finished honestly, is a better birthday message than anything on this page. The messages below are here for the days when the sentence will not come.

How to make a birthday card for grandma from the whole family
The family card is the one that ends up on the mantelpiece, and it is also the hardest to pull off. Somebody buys the card, it goes to one house, it never makes it to the next, and the cousins in another city sign nothing. Grandma gets a card from "everyone" that four people actually wrote in.
A group card at a link fixes this. One person starts it and sends the link round the family chat. Everyone adds their own message from wherever they are: the grandchild at university, the sister overseas, the four-year-old who draws a cat on it with her finger. Old photos go in alongside the words, and anyone can record a short video, which is the part grandmothers replay. When the birthday comes, the card is sent to her phone or tablet, or opened with her on a laptop. An envelope opens, the song you chose plays, and the messages arrive one by one, so she reads each one properly instead of skimming a page of signatures.
If she prefers paper, the same card can be printed with the family's greeting handwritten inside and mailed to her door. Many families do both: the printed card for the mantelpiece, the reveal for the video of the grandchildren singing.
One tip that makes these cards much better: ask everyone for a memory, not a message. "Tell Grandma one thing you remember from her house" produces a card she will read for the rest of the year.
